Our tour of Honmaru and Nijo castles were excellent. We were able to score last minute reservations to tour Honmaru, and were so glad. It is a walk through Japanese history, and gave a sense of the architectural and artistic significance juxtaposed with the politics of the era. The staff was welcoming but appropriately strict, commemsurate with the historical significance of the castles. The official web site is a bit clunky to navigate but I was able to ultimately figure it out.
